SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Kenneth Hitt, 96, of Valley, Neb., formerly of South Sioux City, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at his residence.

Services were held Jan. 22 at Reichmuth Funeral Home in Elk Horn, Neb. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery in Elk Horn.

Kenneth was born in rural Le Mars, Iowa, in 1908. The Hitt family moved to South Sioux City in 1913. He graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1927.

He married Nellie Dixon in 1927. He went to work for Sioux Tools in Sioux City, working as a grinder technician. He eventually moved up to the sales department, working a Midwest route from the Canadian border to Texas for many years. In 1960, he was appointed to the board of directors. He retired from Sioux Tools in 1973. He moved his family to Valley, Neb.

He was a civic-minded individual. He was a Boy Scout leader in South Sioux City and a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge in South Sioux City, where he received his 70-year pin last year.

He was a member of the Abu Bekr Shrine Corvette Club. He was a past president of the Valley School board and a past member of the Valley Fire Department. He was a member of the Husker Touch Down Club for the past 50 years.

He was a lifelong member of the Methodist church. The couple enjoyed traveling in their Winnebago camper on fishing and camping trips.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Sampson of Valley, Neb.; grandchildren, Kenny and Nancy Neher of Omaha, Curt and Chris Sampson of Valley and David Sampson of Davenport, Iowa; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie; his parents, Clarence and Nellie Hitt of South Sioux City; a sister, Luella Baack of South Sioux City; a brother, Delbert Hitt of Lincoln, Neb.; and a daughter, Elaine Neher of Omaha.

Pallbearers were Douglas Hitt, Dennis Olsen, Kenny Neher, David Sampson and Curt and Chris Sampson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Valley Methodist Church and Valley Fire Department.
