Thomas McNamara

SERGEANT BLUFF -- Thomas McNamara, 72, of Sergeant Bluff, formerly of Kingsley, Iowa, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Embassy Rehab and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kingsley, with the Rev. Thomas J. Topf officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley.

Thomas was born Oct. 6, 1930, in Kingsley, the son of William D. and Sarah E. (Madden) McNamara. He graduated from Kingsley High School in 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and following his active duty, he was a member of the Army Reserves for many years. During his military service he was involved in engineering and earned degrees in civil engineering. He also had training in traffic engineering, street lighting and air strip construction along with other general engineering studies.

He worked for 22 years in highway design, survey and inspection. During his career in engineering, he worked in California, Arizona and Iowa, both in the public and private sectors. Later, he worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He helped with construction projects in the Waterloo, Iowa area including, the completion of the interstate highway connecting Cedar Rapids with Waterloo and Cedar Falls.

He is survived by a brother and his wife, Elmer "Mac" and Pat McNamara of South Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Raymond, Allen and James; and two sisters, Ethel Carey and Nellie Lewis.
