LE MARS, Iowa -- Evelyn Roberta Manning, 83, of Washington D.C., formerly of Le Mars, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2003, in Arlington, Va., near her home.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. today at the Cardinal Newman Center at the George Washington University in Washington D.C. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Sunday, with a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Evelyn was born Feb. 15, 1920, in Le Mars. She lived much of her early life in Kingsley, Iowa. She attended Garfield Township 6, a one-room country school, near Kingsley, Kingsley High School and graduated from Le Mars Central High School, with her sister, Eileen, in the class of 1936.
After graduation, she attended college for a year at Westmar College in Le Mars and was later employed in Le Mars and Des Moines. In 1942, she joined the U.S. Government workforce in Washington D.C. with the Department of State. Her duties with other government agencies carried her to San Francisco, Africa, Italy, The Near East, Hawaii, Japan, France, Great Britain, Columbia, Venezuela and others. She traveled and studied in Spain, Mexico, Canada, Israel, Greece, Switzerland and other countries.
After six years of duty in the Air Force Attache office in Bogota, Columbia, she returned to Washington D.C. and enrolled for study at the George Washington University. She received a bachelor of arts degree in 1966, a first master's degree in 1972 and a second master's degree in 1972. At her retirement in 1999, she was the chief of the Records Management and Research Branch of the U.S. Department of State.
She had a long and distinguished employment career mostly with the Federal Government before retiring in 1999, with 49 years of government service. During her employment, travel and studies, she lived in or visited 38 foreign countries.
She was skilled as an author of short stories and had published works. Her stories usually had a humorous ending. She was a fervent equestrian and owned horses from time to time. She joined riding groups in Virginia, Montana, Canada, Mexico and Spain.
She leaves her brother, Gerald Manning, and his wife, Janet, of Le Mars and her brother, Jack "John" Manning, and his wife, Helen, of Arlington, Va. She also leaves 14 nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
She never married and was the daughter of Raymond A. and Hazel (Sheehan) Manning who passed away in 1970 and 1978, respectively. Her sister, Eileen Shirley Cope passed away in 1949, leaving two small children.
