SERGEANT BLUFF -- Harold E. Heiden Sr., 79, of Sergeant Bluff died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa, with the Rev. Donald J. Slaven officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home in Sioux City.

Mr. Heiden was born Nov. 8, 1924, in Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of LeRoy W. and Elsie R. (Epling) Heiden. He was raised in Plymouth County and graduated from Merrill (Iowa) High School.

He married Catherine Dolores Vollmer on March 29, 1948, in Sioux City. After their marriage, the couple lived in Plymouth County for a couple of years before moving to rural Sergeant Bluff in the early 1950s. He farmed all of his life, owning and operating his own farm for the majority of that time. In his later years, he helped take care of the fairways and greens at the 27 Flags Golf Course in Sergeant Bluff. Mrs. Heiden died Dec. 22, 2002, in Sioux City.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was a bee keeper and enjoyed fishing and playing cards, especially cribbage.

He is survived by three sons, Harold E. Heiden Jr. of Sioux City, Les Heiden and his wife, Donna of Anchorage, Alaska, and Greg Heiden and his wife, Wylene of Sloan, Iowa; two daughters, Christine M. and her husband, Dennis Arndt of Brandon, Minn., and Dawn E. Heiden of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two brothers, Mainard Heiden and his wife, Betty of Durango, Colo., and Dwight Heiden of Worthington, Minn.; two sisters, Gladys and her husband, Don Stuart of Worthington, Minn., and Verda Delperdang of Merrill, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and three sisters, Evelyn Bock, Cynthia Heiden and Iola Schleis.

Pallbearers will be Chad, Nathan, Jennifer and Rochell Heiden, Rebecca Heiden, Amelia Heiden, Ryan Arndt, Carrie Arndt, Katherine Arndt, Stacy Arndt, Heather Cummings and Matt Goodwin.
