AKRON, Iowa -- Marie E. Heeren, 92, of Akron passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at the Akron Care Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Union Creek Lutheran Church in rural Akron, with the Rev. Glen Lundahl officiating. Burial will be in Union Creek Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after noon today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home-Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Marie E. Heeren was born Feb. 12, 1912, in Sioux Valley Township in Union County, S.D., one of twins born to Elmer and Adina (Ericson) Hultgren. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Union Creek Lutheran Church. She attended country school in Sioux Valley Township and later graduated from Akron High School.
She was united in marriage to Wesley Heeren on Feb. 5, 1930, at Union Creek Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Sioux Valley Township for many years. After retiring, the couple moved to Akron. Wesley passed away Nov. 21, 1985, in Akron. For the past year, Marie had been a resident of the Akron Care Center.
She was a lifelong member of Union Creek Lutheran Church in rural Akron, where she was a former superintendent of the Sunday school program, past leader of the men's quartet and a member of the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Akron Senior Center. Marie enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge. She also enjoyed needlepoint and knitting.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond Heeren and his wife, June, Kervyn Heeren and his wife, Joanne and Verne Heeren and his wife, Marilyn, all of Akron; 10 grandchildren, Steven Heeren and his wife, Lillian, Robin Heeren and his wife, Debra, Janet Willer and her husband, Grayling, Mark Heeren and his wife, Michelle, Greg Heeren and his wife, Lori, David Heeren and his wife, Kerry, Gary Heeren and his wife, Barb, Kurt Heeren and his wife, Tracy, Craig Heeren and his wife, Julite and Kevin Heeren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Kenneth, Russell and Earl; and her twin sister, Marion Sykes.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
