REMSEN, Iowa -- Eugene "Gene" Harte, 75, of Remsen died Friday, April 5, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hart officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen, with graveside military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Mr. Harte was born July 14, 1926, in rural Inman, Neb., the son of William and Mayme (Gallagher) Harte. He was raised in the Inman area and graduated from Inman Public School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1944 until 1947, serving in the South Pacific. After his discharge, he moved to Sheldon, Iowa, where he was employed at the Chase Lumber Company.

He married Colleen Daniels on June 2, 1949, in Sheldon, where they made their home. They moved to Remsen in 1954, where he managed the Remsen Lumber Company until his retirement in 1990. He had been a resident of the Abbey of Le Mars since 1992. Colleen died Sept. 29, 1994.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220, both of Remsen.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathi Bauler and her special friend, Dennis Frederick, both of Remsen, and Mary "Bee" and her husband, Scott Carey of Loveland, Colo.; two sons, William "Buck" an his wife, Joan of Brandon, S.D., and Leon of Denver, Colo.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Bill and Ruth of San Jacinto, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Vera Harte of O'Neill, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael; and two brothers, Leo and Bob.

Pallbearers will be Meg, Manea, Michael W., Abi, Mollie and Carrie Hart, Kevin Gengler and Erin Blankenship. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Hatz, Art and Gene Loutsch, Richard Moritz, Marvin Pottebaum and Randy Vaske.
