Melvin Hansen

AKRON, Iowa -- Melvin Hansen, 100, of Akron passed away Thursday, June 9, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., in Akron, with the Rev. Glenn Lundahl officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Carlsen Funeral Home-Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Melvin Oliver Hansen was born Dec. 22, 1904, on the family farm south of Beresford, S.D., the son of Peter and Gertrude (Kegarice) Hansen. He was educated in area rural schools. As he grew into a young man, he and his older brother worked for area farmers, following thrashing crews.

He met Alice J. Miller and they were married on May 26, 1928, in Elk Point, S.D. They started farming in very tough years. They were the parents of two sons, Curtis and LaRue. Alice passed away in January 1992. Melvin continued to live in his home in Akron until August 2003, when he entered Akron Care Center. He celebrated his 100th birthday in December 2004 at the care center with many family and friends. His family and friends were very important to him.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. He was also a member of the Akron Senior Center, where he enjoyed playing cards.

Survivors include his sons, Curtis of Le Mars, and LaRue and his wife, Adele of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Sonja and her husband, Jeff Harms of Le Mars, Staci and his wife, Lori of Akron, and Pamela Hansen of Sioux City; five great-grandchildren, Samantha and Dylan Harms, Brandon, Morgan and Jacob Hansen; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; five brothers, Lyman, Vernon, Delmar, Russell and Palmer; five sisters, Gladys Larson, Mildred Olson, Evelyn Perdriau, Ferne Parker and Virginia Granholm; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Hansen; a great-granddaughter, Rachel Harms; and a great-grandson, Darin Harms.

Pallbearers will be Wyatt Hansen, James Olund, Gary Parker, Gordon Parker, Alvern Buum and Lyle Lawrensen. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
