LE MARS, Iowa -- William G. "Bill" Hamann, 87, of Le Mars passed away Saturday, June 25, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will begin 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
William George Hamann was born on May 10, 1919, west of Merrill, Iowa in Liberty Township. He was the son of Emil and Therese (Doering) Hamann. He received his education at Liberty Consolidated School.
On Sept. 27, 1940, Bill and Mildred Hamann were united in marriage at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Johnson Township. The couple made their home in Le Mars. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army in January of 1942. He served with the Army Division 546 Standing Aircraft as a sergeant. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945. Bill was employed with the Le Mars Community School District for 26 years as the Director of Building and Grounds. During his retirement years, he was a member of Mission Builders. From 1987 to 1994, Bill helped to build churches in Belgrade, Mont., Albuquerque, N.M., Gehring, Neb., Indianapolis, Ind., Dalbo, Minn. and Wichita, Kan.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars and participated in Tuesday morning Bible study. He was also a member of the Wasmer Post 241 of the American Legion, World War II Last Man's Club and the Sportsman Club in Le Mars. Bill enjoyed playing pinochle, fishing, gardening, carpentry and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Bill will be lovingly remembered by his children, Glenn Hamann and his wife, Phyllis of Le Mars, Gayle Maney of Anthony, Fla., Lynn Hamann and his wife, Carlene of Danbury, Iowa, Joyce Eldridge of Portales, N.M., Carol Taylor and her husband, Dennis of Le Mars and Tamie Schmidt and her husband, Brent of Amarillo, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Viola Braakman and her husband, Fred of Green Valley, Minn.; a brother, Duane Hamann and his wife, Donna of Lincoln, Neb.; two sisters-in-law, Jolene Hamann of Le Mars and Maxine Bystorm of Lincoln, Neb.; special family friends, Barb and Gerry Brock; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred on Dec. 3, 1988; a daughter, Judy; a brother, Fred "Fritz" Hamann; a sister-in-law, Elaine Utesch and her husband, Art.
