LE MARS, Iowa -- Helen Hansen, 84, of Le Mars died Thursday, April 8, 2004 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars, with the Revs. Dean Goebel and Randall Knuth of Plymouth Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Monday in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Helen Ida Hansen was born Feb. 17, 1920 in Le Mars, the daughter of Hans and Amanda (Mohr) Hansen. She graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1937. She attended Westmar College and later the National Business School in Sioux City.

Helen was Deputy Recorder for Plymouth County for 22 years from 1946 to 1968. She then was elected as Plymouth County Recorder and served as an elected official for 14 years from 1969 to 1982. Helen was always known for her customer service and accuracy during her tenure in the Recorder's office. She retired from the county on Dec. 31, 1982.

Helen was active in the Democratic Party at the local and state level. She attended many Democratic meetings and conventions through the years, including the 1976 Presidential Inauguration of Jimmy Carter. She was a Plymouth Manor Promoter and Floyd Valley Hospital Auxiliary member. She was a member of Presbyterian United Church of Christ. Helen enjoyed baking, knitting, crocheting and craft projects. She particularly enjoyed knitting and working on other projects for charity, including knitting children's mittens for local schools, churches and the Christian Needs Center. Helen enjoyed socializing and traveling with her many friends and spending time with her family and their children.

Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Lee and her husband, Ray, of Sheldon, Iowa and Donna Lucken and her husband, Arlen, of Le Mars; many nieces and nephews and their children, all of whom loved "Aunt Helen".

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Margaret Rubbert; and four brothers, Henry, Raymond and William Hansen and a brother in infancy.
