LE MARS, Iowa -- Orville A. Hames, 82, a longtime Remsen, Iowa attorney from Le Mars died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars from complications following a stroke on July 13, 2004.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in Le Mars Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Wasmer Post 241. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 6:30 p.m., at Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Orville was born July 16, 1922, on the family farm northeast of Remsen, Iowa, the son of Anton and Lucy (Wilmes) Hames. He was raised in the Remsen area. He graduated from Le Mars Central High School and attended Western Union College in Le Mars and Trinity College in Sioux City. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, from February 1943 to February 1946. While stationed overseas in the Philippine Islands, he served as a radio mechanic and earned the rank of corporal. He received two Philippine Liberation Ribbons, and the Good Conduct Medal. He also qualified as a carbine sharpshooter. Following his honorable discharge, he attended Creighton University in Omaha, then went to St. Paul College of Law in St. Paul, Minn., where he received his juris doctorate.

He married Carma Miller on Aug. 6, 1953, in Clarinda, Iowa. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Remsen, where he started his law practice. In 1960, the couple moved to Le Mars. He continued to operate his law firm in Remsen.

He was a member of the Iowa Bar Association, American Legion Wasmer Post 241 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 1381. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, flying and traveling. He was very proud of his Luxembourg heritage. He enjoyed playing the accordion and always strived to learn to play it better.

Survivors include his wife, Carma of Le Mars; four children, Orville Hames Jr. and his wife, Barbara, Julie Madden and her husband, Rick, Elaine Mallette-Karli and her husband, Gary Karli and Robert Hames, all of Le Mars; a stepdaughter, Marlene Haney and her husband, Bruce of Omaha; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Goetzinger of Le Mars; and a sister-in-law, Marcine Hames of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Richard P. and Raphael Hames.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Jessica Ramos, Kyla Marking, Mindy Hames, Matt Haney, Ryan Haney, Jeremy Karli, Jonathon Marking, Michael Hames and Jeremiah Mallette.
