Ione Viola Grothaus was born Oct. 28, 1907, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the daughter of Peter O. and Sarah Jennie (Wood) Peterson. She started her education in Eagle Grove. Her mother passed away when she was 10, so she moved to Forest City, Iowa, to live with extended family. She later moved to Sioux City to live with her sister, Pauline Pettit. She worked as a cook for a family near Kingsley, Iowa.
This was where she met her future husband, John "Jack" Grothaus. The couple were wed on March 24, 1926, in Sioux City. They moved to Le Mars from Kingsley in 1942, when Jack was transferred by the Iowa Highway Commission. Jack passed away on Dec. 9, 1976. She remained in Le Mars and moved to Brentwood Good Samaritan Center on April 9, 1996, where she enjoyed playing in the Hand Bell Choir. She enjoyed all the activities at Brentwood and it was hard to find her in her room.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. She was active in Circle and Altar Guild. She was a member of the Sunshine Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Throughout the years, she collected numerous hand bells.
She will be lovingly remembered by a son and his wife, Robert and Charlotte Grothaus of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Richard John Grothaus of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Brenda Marie and her husband, Ron Grimsley of Sloan, Iowa; five great-grandchildren, Alixandria, Hylarie and Jordan Dorpinghaus, Josh Grimsley and his special friend, Cathy Boyle, and Holly Grimsley; and a sister-in-law, Marian Grothaus of Cherokee, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; and her siblings, Melbourn Peterson, Orville Peterson, Pauline Pettit and Arlene Rogers.
