Dr. Jon H. Gates

LE MARS, Iowa -- Dr. Jon H. Gates, 66, of Burlington, Iowa, formerly of Le Mars, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Burlington, with the Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Sunday, with the family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Prugh's Funeral Chapel in Burlington.

Dr. Gates was born Dec. 23, 1935, to Raymond and Helen Gates in Le Mars. Following graduation from Marcus (Iowa) Public School, he attended Westmar College in Le Mars, the University of South Dakota and the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He interned and had a year of family practice residency at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Mich. After three years of general practice, he was drafted during the Vietnam War and served in Fort Eustis, Va., and Istanbul, Turkey.

He then did a radiology residency at St. Louis University. He practiced radiology at Burlington Medical Center from 1972 to 2001. He served in the elective offices of chief of staff of Burlington Medical Center, president of Des Moines County Medical Society and president of the Iowa Radiology Society. He was named Fellow of the American College of Radiology, the only Burlington radiologist to receive this distinction.

Dr. Gates and his wife, Kathy Ann have eight children and seven grandchildren. He has four brothers, Keith Gates of Noblesville, Ind., Tom Gates of Le Mars, Brian Gates of Leawood, Kan., and Dan Gates of Marcus, Iowa; four sisters, Jan Schilmoeller of Littleton, Colo., Merilee Bulland of Omaha, Lynette Gates of Woodridge, Va., and Carol Mullen of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorials may be directed to Great River Medical Center, Radiology Department and the Keokuk Area Hospital.
