Richard A. Leaverton, 65, of Kingsley, Iowa, formerly of Le Mars, Iowa, and Sioux City, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital, following a brief battle with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Dr. Allen D. Call officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Richard Leaverton was born March 31, 1938 in Sioux City, the son of Thomas O. and Ethel M. (Johnston) Leaverton. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1962. Richard lived in Sioux City from 1938 until moving to Le Mars in 1972. He remained a resident of Le Mars until moving to Kingsley in 1995.

He married Bette L. Olson June 29, 1963 in Sioux City. The couple was married for 24 years.

Richard was an avid gardener and enjoyed crossword puzzles and woodworking.

Survivors include a daughter, Lana Leaverton and her special friend, Tom Groszkrueger, of Sioux City; two sons, Richard Leaverton and his wife, Sue, of Le Mars and Derek Leaverton of Sioux City; three brothers, Thomas Leaverton and his wife, Julie, of Le Mars, William Leaverton and his wife, Sharen, of Sioux City and Jerry Leaverton and his wife, Eleanor, of Merrill, Iowa; six grandchildren, Anna Groszkrueger, Ben and Jeremy De Wit, Vincent and William R. Leaverton and Cyrus Leaverton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Betty Jepsen.

Pallbearers will be Ted Dreckman, Ronald Dahlman, Rick Dahlman, Bob Sherlock, Randy Olson and Archie Port, Sr.
