MARCUS, Iowa -- Walter H. Letsche, 89, of Cherokee, Iowa, formerly of Marcus, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Careage Hills Nursing Home in Cherokee.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Marcus, with the Rev. Don Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Remsen City Cemetery, Remsen, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus.
Walter was born Oct. 5, 1914 in rural Marcus, the son of Herman and Rosine (Nagel) Letsche. He was baptized Oct. 25, 1914 at Trinity Lutheran Church and confirmed April 1, 1928 at the same church.
Walter married Eva Jane Schumacher June 22, 1940. After their marriage, the couple lived and farmed in the Marcus area. In 1993 they moved to Cherokee.
Walter was an avid baseball fan, the Yankees being his favorite team. He also enjoyed playing cards and being able to spend time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Jane Letsche of Cherokee; three sons and their wives, Richard and Bernadine Letsche of Edina, Minn., Phil and Judy Letsche of Marcus and Roger and Becky Letsche of Scurry, Texas; a daughter, Mary Lickiss of Cherokee; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leland, Carl and Erwin; two sisters, Hilda Kass and Rose Nielsen; and a son-in-law, Jim "Buckwheat" Lickiss.
