LE MARS, Iowa -- Gladys Laughton, 92, of Le Mars passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Jason Larson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time today, with the family present 10 a.m. to noon, at the funeral home.

Gladys was born Dec. 12, 1910, on a farm in Lyon County, Iowa, to Lars and Julia Severson. She graduated from Larchwood (Iowa) High School and attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. Following her education, she taught in rural schools in Moody County, S.D.

On Nov. 5, 1953, she and Richard Laughton were united in marriage in Mankato, Minn. The couple made their home in Le Mars. The couple managed the Le Mars Municipal Country Club from 1968 until their retirement in 1975. Richard passed away March 7, 1999.

She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Le Mars. She helped with various functions and with the flower committee. She was a master gardener and the couple enjoyed entertaining guests in the beautiful backyard. They also enjoyed dancing, antiquing and golfing. She will also be remembered for the baking, floral arrangements and decorating.

She will be lovingly remembered by her stepchildren, Tom Laughton and his wife, Dianne, of Le Mars, Barbara and her husband, Joe Byrnes, of Miami, Fla., and John Laughton of Bristol, R.I.; and six stepgrandchildren, Julie Laughton, Jean Laughton, Patrick Byrnes, Michael Byrnes, Benjamin Laughton and Nic Laughton.

In addition to her husband, Richard, she was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings.
