Niels Larson

LE MARS, Iowa - Niels C. Larson, 95, of Marcus, Iowa, formerly of Le Mars, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at the Orange City Hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Le Mars with the Revs. Gary Landsness and Liz Pfeifle officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Brad Jensen officiating at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home, Le Mars. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.

Niels Christian Larson was born Nov. 8, 1908 on the family farm in Fredonia Township, Plymouth County, Iowa to Jens Peter and Engeborg Marie (Nielsen) Larson. He attended country school and assisted his family with farming. Niels enlisted in the United Stated Navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Following his training in diesel mechanics, Niels served aboard the USS Markab. He attained the rank of Machinist' Mate Second Class prior to his honorable discharge on Nov. 14, 1945.

Niels returned to the family farm in Fredonia Township and would live and farm there for the majority of his life. Upon retirement he would move to Le Mars. He later moved to rural Marcus, Iowa and spent the last eight years there.

Niels was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He played baseball with the Fredonia Township Baseball Team in his younger years and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves fan.

He is survived by his three nieces, Bonnie Lassen and her husband Gaylen of Remsen, Iowa, Linda Niehus and her husband Randy of Le Mars, and Betty Neisius of Marcus; two nephews Gary Larson and his wife Joy of Remsen and Lowell Larson and his wife Eileen of Battle Lake, Minn.; and several great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant twin siblings, brothers Lou, Henry, Nis, Martin, Herbert, Elmer and infant brother Niels; sisters Herlig Larson, Elsie Larson and Viola Neisius.

Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church, Le Mars.
