ED J. DIRKS

AKRON, Iowa—Ed. J. Dirks, 85, longtime Akron businessman, died Tuesday in a hospital in Akron after a long illness.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. The Rev. Bernard Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery. There will be a prayer service at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Schroeder Funeral Home.

Mr. Dirks was born March 18, 1897, in Plymouth County. He attended schools in LeMars and Valparaiso University in Indiana for two years.

He made his home in Brunsville where he married Maude Richards May 22, 1922. They moved to Akron in 1923 where he acquired an interest in an automobile dealership. He was associated with Dirks Motor Co. for almost 60 years as partner, president and owner. Mrs. Dirks died in 1973. He had been a resident of the Akron Nursing Home since 1981.

Mr. Dirks was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. William (Betty) DeRoos of Omaha; one son, Richard of Akron; two brothers, Walter and Henry, both of Akron; three sisters, Minnie Downing of Bayonne, N.J., Anna Frerichs of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Marie Hunter of Woodward, Okla.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
