Lawrence F. Ney, 97, of Granville, died Friday, June 13, 2008, at Orange City Area Health System Hospital in Orange City.

Lawrence F. Ney was born Aug. 6, 1910, at rural Granville, the son of John and Mary (Klein) Ney. Lawrence was raised in the Granville area and received his education at St. Joseph Catholic School in Granville. He then farmed north of Granville. On Aug. 10, 1936, he married Helen Langel at LeMars, IA. They made their home near Granville where they were engaged in farming until retiring and moving into Granville in 1975. Helen died Nov. 26, 1980. Lawrence had been a resident of Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon since August 2005.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville and Catholic Order of Foresters for more than 50 years. Lawrence enjoyed playing cards and watching baseball.

Survivors include three sons, James and his wife Pauline of Albuquerque, N.M., Donald of Granville, Mark and his wife Barb of Bloomington, Minn.; three daughters and their husbands, Judy and Irven Block of Ashton, Jane and James Streff of West Plains Mo., Joyce and Mark Even of Rochester, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Jack and his wife Doralice of Granville; four sisters, Marie Meinen of Sibley, Rosalia Koob, Frances Koob and Colleen Penning, all of Granville; four sisters-in-law, Marie Olson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Kathryn Ney of Orange City, Evelyn Ney of Granville, and Millie Ney of Sheldon.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert; two daughters-in-law, Bonnie and Joan Ney; three grandchildren, Christopher, Eric and Terrence Ney; five brothers, Robert in infancy, Peter, Theodore, Anthony and Joseph; two sisters, Elizabeth in infancy, Emma Graff; ad five brothers-in-law, Clarence Graff, Edwin Koob, Ade Penning, Milo Koob and Louie Meinen.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville with the Rev. Richard Ball officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemtery in Granville.

Visitation was after 4 p.m. Sunday, with a rosary at 5 p.m. by St. Joseph Guild and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church.

The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Spalding Catholic School at Granville.
