Bertha Rexwinkel, 87, of Orange City, died Saturday, June 14, 2008, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.

Bertha Rexwinkel was born Nov. 24, 1920, on the family farm near Rock Valley, the daughter of John A. and Agnes (Mulder) Van Zanten. She was raised in Rock Valley, Sioux Center, and later Alton, where she graduated from Alton High School in 1938. She was united in marriage to Joseph J. Rexwinkel on Sept. 12, 1946 in Ireton. They made their home in Alton. Bertha worked for the Sioux County Auditor's office for 25 years from 1957 to 1982. For 17 of those years, she served as deputy auditor. For eight of those years, she served at the auditor for Sioux County. In 1990, the couple moved to Orange City. In December 2004, they moved to the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.

She was a longtime member of Alton Reformed Church in Alton, where she was a former member of the Reformed Church Women's Ministries. In earlier years, she and her husband were youth sponsors and Sunday school teachers. She enjoyed sewing and knitting. She also enjoyed cooking and working crossword puzzles. She was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren in all of their activities. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband of more than 61 years, Joe of Orange City; a son, John Rexwinkel and his wife Lorene of Le Mars; three grandchildren, Jill Eberle and her husband Dan of Bloomington, Ill., Jane Arnold and her husband Darrin of Remsen, and Dan Rexwinkel and his wife Lori of Akron; four great-grandchildren: Jackson, Meredith, Lauren, and Ethan; two brothers, C.E. Van Zanten and his wife Audrey of Orange City, and Tony Van Zanten and his wife Kathy of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two sisters, Sadie Hansen and her husband Harold of Alton, and Irene Ekdom and her husband Adrian of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and two sisters-in-law: Jean Van Zanten of Orange City and Wilma Van Zanten of Grand Rapids, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Barbara; and three brothers, Richard, John, and Henry Van Zanten.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Alton Reformed Church in Alton. The Revs. Michael and Elizabeth Hardeman will officiate. Private interment will be held in Nassau Township Cemetery, rural Alton, prior to the service. Visitation with the family present will be from 6 to 8 p.m., today (Monday) at the church in Alton. The Carlsen Funeral Homes of Le Mars and Akron are in charge of arrangements.
