SUTHERLAND, Iowa -- Helen Mathern, 86, of Woodbury, Minn., formerly of Sutherland, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, at Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland, with the Rev. William Paul McKane officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Paullina, Iowa.

Helen Linnea Mathern, the daughter of John Albert and Esther Hilder (Swanson) Kimblad, was born Feb. 9, 1919, in Remsen, Iowa. She moved with her parents to their farm northeast of Paullina, Iowa, in Dale Township in 1930. She graduated from Primghar (Iowa) High School in 1937. After graduation, she worked at Emil Olander and Co. Drug Store and Claussen's Bakery in Primghar.

On July 26, 1945, she was united in marriage to Carl Leon Mathern in Sutherland. After their marriage, they moved to the Frank and Catherine Mathern farm one mile south of Gaza, Iowa. They farmed along with Paul and Christine Mathern until 1980, when they built a home in Sutherland. In September 2004, they moved to the St. Paul, Minn. area where her daughters and families lived.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 59 and one half years, Carl Mathern of Woodbury, Minn.; two daughters, Linda and her husband, Stan Swenson of St. Paul, Minn., and Donna Anderson and Jim Emmerling of Woodbury, Minn.; five grandchildren, Brenda and her husband, Ryan Benson, Jennifer and her husband, Eric Olson, Karin and her husband, Jeff Heil, Michael Swenson and Brian Anderson; a great-grandson, Johnathan Benson; a brother and his wife, Axel and Ellen Kimblad of Primghar, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Marget Kimblad of Paullina, Iowa; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Carl Arthur Kimblad.
