LE MARS, Iowa -- Marie Stephens, 87, of rural Le Mars died unexpectedly Friday, May 24, 2002, at her residence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Plymouth Presbyterian Church in rural Akron, Iowa, with the Rev. Randall Knuth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A luncheon will be served at the church after the burial. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Schroeder Funeral Home of Akron.

Marie was born April 17, 1915, in Plymouth County, rural Akron, to William and Margaret (Johnson) Borchers. She married Lyle Stephens at her home on Sept. 1, 1938. The couple farmed their entire life in the Le Mars area. Marie was active in the Plymouth County Farm Bureau and the Plymouth County Republican Women.

For more than 60 years, she was a member of Plymouth Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the women's circle and all aspects of church life. Her hobbies included cooking, golfing, playing cards and working with flowers. Marie loved and enjoyed her family.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Correia and her husband, Jack of Akron, Iowa, and Mary Loughran and her husband, Richard of Iowa City, Iowa; a son, Jay B. Stephens and his wife, Julie of Alexandria, Va; eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was grateful for the special friendships of Phyllis Wendt, Jean and Dean Rowe, Shirley Timmons, and Leroy DeBoer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle R.; three brothers, Ed, Jack and Herman; two sisters, Emma and Minnie; and a son-in-law, Dr. Joseph C. Torbert.

Pallbearers will be Jack Correia, Richard, Jason, Elizabeth and Alicia Loughran, Stephannie and Doug Hageman, Eric and Melissa Torbert, Amanda, Jessica and Alexandra Stephens, and Jay Stephens Jr.
