Shirley E. Kass, 75, of Oyens, died suddenly Monday, April 7, 2008, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Shirley Elizabeth Schroeder was born Jan. 21, 1933, on the family farm near Kingsley, the daughter of Herman and Bernadine (Rolfes) Schoeder. She attended school at Kingsley and graduated from Kingsley High School in 1951. Shirley went to work for Aalfs Manufacturing in Le Mars in the early 1950s. She was united in marriage to Gregor Kass on Jan. 13, 1955, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kingsley.

Shirley and Gregor farmed in Plymouth County for many years mostly around the Oyens area. She retired from Aalf's Manufacturing in 1995.

Shirley had worked for Timmy's Catering in Le Mars for 18 years and was the school custodian for St. Catherine's School in Oyens for the last 10 years. She had also served as the assistant Postmaster for Oyens for the last 10 years and was a longtime supporter of the Floyd Valley Hospital Auxiliary of which she was currently serving as president. She was recently award a pin for volunteering 5,000 hours with the hospital.

Shirley was a longtime member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens having volunteered with the St. Catherine's Altar Guild, Choir and Christian Mothers Group.

Survivors include her seven children: Kenneth and Tami Kass of Le Mars and their family Greg, Christina and Kevin; Beth and Reed McPhail of Ames and their family Rose and Matthew; Dale and Carolyn Kass of Le Mars and their family Kyle and his wife Dona, Becki, Aimie, and Andy; Suzanne and John Evans of Remsen; Tom and Buppah "Thoy" Kass of Pensecola, Fla., and their family Alex, Michael, Travis, and Stephen; Jerome and Lorna Kass of Remsen; David and Cindy Kass of Le Mars and their family Cheryl and Matt; two great-grandchildren, MaKenna Kass and Desa Ellison; five brothers and sisters: Art and Judy Schroeder of Kingsley, Helen and Bob Hagan of Kingsley, JoAnn Doering of Parkers Prairie, Minn., Marge and Pat Bennett of Twin Peaks, Calif., and Dick and Marilyn Schroeder of Golden, Colo.; in-laws, Imelda Roethler of Marcus, Georgia Kass of Le Mars, Joe and Pat Kass of Cherokee, Ray and Florence Kass of Marcus, and Charlie and Donna Kass of Sioux City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gregor on Sept. 11, 1980; two sisters, Rita (Walt) Idlewine and Bernice Schroeder in infancy; in-laws: Dolores and Carl Letsche, Rita and Ralph Schuetz, Leo and Gwen Kass, and Kathleen Kass.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens. The Rev. Eugene Murray will celebrate. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. today (Wednesday) with the family present after 6 p.m. at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. There will be a 4 p.m. Alter Guild Rosary and a 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service, all at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Greg Kass, Kevin Kass, Kyle Kass, Andy Kass, Matt Kass, Michael Kass, Travis Kass, Alex Kass and Matthew McPhail.
