Andrew "Dale" Lehner, 78, of Le Mars, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Andrew Dale Lehner was born Nov. 11, 1929, on the family farm in Union Township, Plymouth County, the son of Jay and Marguerite (Bruce) Lehner. Dale attended and graduated from Union Consolidated School in 1947. Following his education, Dale helped his family on the farm. In January 1952 he was drafted into the United States Army, and honorably discharged later that year. Upon returning to the area, Dale continued farming.
He was united in marriage to Lucille Schierholt on May 7, 1957, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens, Iowa. The couple farmed near Oyens until retiring in 1989.
Dale was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed wintering down South for many years. Dale enjoyed fishing, playing softball, tennis, shuffleboard, and playing cards.
Dale's passion in life was farming and raising livestock. But most of all, he loved his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, Lucille of Le Mars; his children: Barbara Hoss (Charles) of Swisher, and their children, Andy, Jon, and Alex, Steve Lehner (Roxie) of Le Mars and their children, Angie and Amy, Joe Lehner (Heidi) of Le Mars and their children, Ben, Branden, Matt, Kelsea, and Tristan, Mike Lehner (Sandy) of Remsen, and their children, Justin and Samantha; five great-grandchildren: Hunter, Bennett, Rayann, Emma, and Zachary; two brothers: Verl Lehner (Eunice) of Le Mars and Delmar Lehner (Charlene) of Sheldon; two sisters: Keith Hiemstra of Letcher, S.D. and Hope Friedrichs of Anthon; a brother-in-law: Maynard DeBoer (Eunice) of Archer; and many nieces and nephews.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents; a brother John in infancy; three sisters: Bonnie in infancy, Betty DeBoer, and Joy Baker; three brothers-in-law: Orlo Hiemstra, Merril Friedrichs, and Howard Baker; and his mother and father-in-law: Henry and Mathilda Schierholt.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. The Revs. James Tigges and Richard Ries will officiate. Private family burial will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars with military rites conducted by the American Legion Wasmer Post 241 of Le Mars. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. Thursday, with the family present after 6 p.m. at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. There will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., all at the funeral home. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.
Casketbearers will be Andy Hoss, Jon Hoss, Alex Hoss, Justin Lehner, Ben Lehner, and Branden Lehner.
Memorials can be made in Dale's name to the Le Mars Area Dialysis Center.
