Cornelius "Casey" DenOuden, 82, of Seney, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Cornelius "Casey" DenOuden was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Ireton, the son of Hildebrant and Kathyrn (Muilenberg) DenOuden. Casey was raised and educated in Ireton. During his senior year of high school, Casey enlisted in the United States Navy. After completing his basic training, Casey was able to return to Ireton and graduate with his class in May 1944. Following graduation Casey was assigned to the U.S.S. YMS326 during World War II. He achieved the rank of Yoeman 2nd Class upon his honorable discharge in 1946. He returned to Ireton and worked at the Ireton Elevator.

Casey was united in marriage to Jan DeVos on June 24, 1950 at Sioux Center. Casey moved to Seney and he was the manager of the Seney Elevator for several years. In 1957, Casey began his 31-year career with Nutra-Flo in Sioux City. He retired in 1988.

During his retirement years, he and Jane enjoyed spending the summers working for his nephew as the unofficial "PR Manager" of Ivanhoe Resort on Leech Lake, near Walker, Minn. During the winter months, Casey worked part-time at Carl's Welding in Le Mars. Casey enjoyed sharing his gift for fishing with his children and grandchildren and also doing wood working for his family. He also loved his dog Molly.

Casey will be remembered for his caring nature. He often put the needs of others before his own. He will be remember as a kind husband, father, and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jane of Seney; six children: Sharon Olson and her husband Gene of Seney, Alan DenOuden and his wife Deb of rural Akron, Bruce DenOuden and his wife Jean of rural Le Mars, Deb Olson and her husband Terry of Seney, Patti Harms and her husband Denny of Le Mars, and Brenda Erickson and her husband Bruce of Seney; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Bertha and Willard Huitink of Sioux Center; several in-laws: Jack and Dolly DeVos of Sioux Center, Alice "Nupe" Jeltema of Orange City, Herm and Mert DeVos of Orange City, Marv and Geneva DeVos of Le Mars, and Nel and Don DeGooyer of Sioux Center; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hildebrant and Kathyrn (Muilenberg) DenOuden; three sisters, Johanna DeVries, Madge DeRuyter, and Alice DenOuden; a brother in infancy, Bernard DenOuden; a grandson, Brandon Erickson; his mother and father-in-law, Joe and Alice DeVos; and a brother-in-law, Jim Jeltema.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Seney United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jason Larson officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 will be in the Seney Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 5:30 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Matt Olson, Brent DenOuden, Justin Olson, Nick Harms, Casey DenOuden, and Chris Erickson. Honorary casketbearers will be Tanner DenOuden, Tyler DeWit and Mitch DeWit.
