Alvin Scheitler, 87, of Le Mars, died Saturday April 5, 2008, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Alvin Leo Scheitler was born Sept. 16, 1920, at Oyens, the son of William and Martha (Masuen) Scheitler. He grew up in the Oyens area and attended St. Catherine's Parochial School. On May 21, 1946 Alvin married Caroline Zenk at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens. To this union eight children were born. Alvin had farmed all of his life and had done custom work corn shelling, baling and farming in the Oyens area.

Alvin and Caroline moved into Le Mars in 1981 and retired in 1983.

Alvin loved playing with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes, checkers, and card games - especially pinochle, mowing lawns in his retirement, music and dancing. He also had a love for farm animals and fishing.

Survivors include his wife Caroline Scheitler of Le Mars; eight children and their spouses: Stanley and Janice Scheitler of Remsen, Jeanette and Norm Schwartz of Hinton, Lyle and Betty Scheitler of Le Mars, Roger and Laurie Scheitler of Merrill, Judy and Bob Campbell of Wichita, Kan., Joann and Donald M. Hoffman of Akron, Rose and David Logan of Des Moines, and Kris and Kelly Mroczkowski of Urbandale; 25 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother Bill Scheitler and his wife Dorothy of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clarence in infancy and Ray Scheitler; two sisters: Olivia Sparks and Helen Weber; a grandson Joseph Lyle Scheitler; and a great-grandson Mitchel David Scheitler.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Kevin Richter presiding and Msgr. Richard Zenk concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery in Oyens. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, where there will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m.

Alvin and Caroline's eight children will be his pallbearers.
