Lorene "Renie" Harms, 87, of Rapid City, S.D., formerly of Craig, passed away peacefully from this earth to her home in heaven on Friday, March 21, 2008 at the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City, S.D.

Lorene M. Asseln was born near Le Mars, on March 24, 1920, the daughter of Dick and Kate (Ommen) Asseln. Lorene or "Renie" as she was known to many, spent much of her youth in the Craig, Iowa, and Hallam, Neb., areas. She was confirmed at the Kramer Lutheran Church in Kramer, Neb., on April 1, 1934. Renie graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1938. She went on to receive her teaching certificate and had taught at several country school near Le Mars.

Lorene was united in marriage to Raymon J. Harms on April 11, 1949. Together the couple had a daughter, Janet. They farmed near Craig until Ray's death in 1967. Later in life, Renie returned to teaching where she taught at St. Catherine's Catholic School in Oyens, until her retirement in 1983.

Lorene enjoyed traveling and often reminisced about the many trips she took with her friends. She enjoyed the summer months, and often times Lorene could be found pulling weeds and tending to her garden and flowers. She enjoyed the many trips to Lake Osakis in Minnesota. She found pleasure in making embroidered items for family and friends. She enjoyed playing cards and had belonged to several card clubs.

She was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Craig. At the age of 84, Lorene moved to Rapid City to be near her daughter.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Harms of Rapid City, S.D.; a brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Shirley Asseln of Craig; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Ray Ludwig of Augusta, Kan., and Kathleen and Ken Cronin of Le Mars; a brother-in-law, Jake Wabeke of Gowrie; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dick and Kate (Ommen) Asseln; her husband Ray; a brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Sycuia Asseln; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Wabeke.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig. Interment will be in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, rural Craig. Visitations will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 6 p.m. Visitations will continue Wednesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Keith Asseln, Rick Ludwig, Dick Asseln, Randy Asseln, Scott Cronin, and Mark Cronin.
