Edwin J. Meyer, 81, of Le Mars, died Friday, March 14, 2008, at the Hallmark Care Center in Sioux City, Iowa after an extended illness.

Edwin J. Meyer was born Nov. 26, 1926, on a farm in Grant Township, rural Plymouth County, the son of Ernest and Dorette (Janssen) Meyer. Ed was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. J.D. Meyer. When he was four years old, the family purchased a farm south of Ireton in Reading Township, Sioux County. Ed attended country school and later attended high school in Ireton. He served his country in the United States Army from May 22, 1951 until his honorable discharge on May 23, 1953.

Edwin was united in marriage to Charlotte DeBoer on May 26, 1955, at the Alton Reformed Church. In 1956, Ed assumed operation of the family farm and continued to actively farm until 2004. Ed enjoyed farming, feeding cattle and hogs. In September 1987, Ed and Charlotte moved to Le Mars when his son, Stan assumed the operation of the farm.

Ed and Charlotte enjoyed bowling, and they bowled in the couples league for more than 30 years in Le Mars. He enjoyed International tractors and was very proud to own the "red" tractors. He enjoyed watching and attending St. Louis Cardinals' baseball games with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed collecting cardinal figurines, playing pinochle, and watching NASCAR races. He and Charlotte also enjoyed trips to Branson, Mo.

Ed was a longtime member of Christ Lutheran Church and upon moving to Le Mars they had attended St. John's Lutheran Church for the past 20 years. Ed was a 50-year member of the Heeren-McHale-Wilken American Legion Post #724 of Brunsville.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Charlotte of Le Mars; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Bonnie Meyer of Ireton and their children, Tyler, Austin, and Emily, and Paul and Becky Meyer of Ft. Calhoun, Neb., and their children, Jamie, Kyle, and Derek; a daughter, Sharla Mallett of West Des Moines; six grandchildren: Jamie, Kyle, Derek, Tyler, Austin, and Emily; a sister, Elnora Borchers and her husband Marlin of Oro Valley, Ariz.; sisters-in-law: Charlene Kloster of Longmont, Colo., Katherine DeBoer of Orange City and Retha DeBoer of Alton; numerous nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Orville and Barbara Bailey of North Sioux City, S.D.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Dorette (Janssen) Meyer; a sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Melvin Siebels; and three brothers-in-law, Homer, Dudley, and Robert DeBoer.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Heeren-McHale-Wilken American Legion Post #724 of Brunsville will be in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, rural Le Mars. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 5 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service, all at the funeral home. Visitation will continue at the church Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Stan Meyer, Paul Meyer, Jamie Meyer, Kyle Meyer, Derek Meyer, Tyler Meyer, and Austin Meyer. Honorary pallbearers will be his "coffee friends at Hy-Vee."
