Duane Eugene Haack, 78, of Sioux City, and a former Remsen area resident, died Sunday, March 9, 2008, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Assembly of God Church, 4310 Old Lakeport Rd., Sioux City, with the Rev. Lee Crum officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Reserves Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 4 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brother Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave.

Duane Eugene Haack, 78, of Sioux City departed peacefully to his heavenly home on Sunday, March 9, 2008, following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday March 15, 2008 at Morningside Assembly of God Church, 4310 Old Lakeport Rd., with the Rev. Lee Crum officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Reserves Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2008 with the family present 4 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brother Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave.

Mr. Haack was born July 30, 1929, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Elmer Carson and Ethel Hulda (Ohlendorf) Haack. He was raised in Remsen, Iowa, and the surrounding areas. He graduated from Remsen High School in 1947. He helped his family with the farming until he entered the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in San Diego, Calif., and served aboard the USS Marshall DD676. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 3, 1954.

He met "the love of his life" and married Verla Marie Hansen on May 1, 1955, at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City. God blessed them with two beautiful daughters. They resided in Remsen, where he helped on the family farm for two years, then worked at Garvin Oil Co. and drove a bus for St. Mary's School. Following that, he drove truck for Gunther Trucking and Greten Trucking. He then worked at Albertson Co. in Le Mars. In 1964, he bought his own truck and started Haack Trucking which was his heart's desire. He became an independent contractor for Midwest Culvert Co. The family moved to Sioux City in 1965. He later leased to St. Regis Paper Company and Contech Corp., retiring from trucking in December 1991. He worked for Sioux Plating for one year.

Although he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, he undertook the job as custodian at Morningside Assembly of God for the next seven years. He took great pride in keeping God's house clean. He was a hard worker. He always left for work with a smile and came home with a smile too. He loved to serve the Lord by ushering, maintaining and driving the church vans and buses. In September 2007, the couple moved to Seward, Neb., to live closer to their daughter and her family. He was a resident of the Anna Sundermann Home, where he received lots of tender loving care.

He enjoyed traveling, especially to see his family, which was his pride and joy. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was a member of the Siouxland Senior Center, where he enjoyed dancing. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.

While in Remsen, he was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and then Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City before joining Central Assembly of God Church in 1972. He joined Morningside Assembly of God Church in 1979.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Verla Marie Haack; two daughters and their families, Gaylene (Rick) Brewer, Josiah Mobley, Kimberly and Billy Brewer, all of Lincoln, Neb., and Marsha (Steve) Mobley, John and Amanda Mobley, all of Grass Valley, Calif.; two brothers, Dean (Nancy) Haack of Sioux City and Rodney Haack and Donna McGlaughlin of Auburn, Calif.; an aunt, Ruth Ann Mehan of Marcus, Iowa; in-laws, cousins and a host of friends.

Family members who are waiting for him in heaven are his parents, Elmer and Ethel Haack; two brothers, Norman Gene and Lowell James; a son-in-law, Michael Joseph Mobley; and his father and mother-in-law, Sophus and Alvena Hansen.

Pallbearers will be Steve Mobley, John Mobley, Rick Brewer, Josiah Mobley, Billy Brewer, Amanda Mobley and Kimberly Brewer. Honorary pallbearers will be Dean and Nancy Haack, Rodney Haack, Donna McGlaughlin, Raymond and Janice Hansen.

Memorials may be made in his name to Morningside Assembly of God Church Memorial Fund (to purchase Bibles), the Disabled American Veterans, Hospice of Siouxland or as designated.
