Lois L. Powell, 89, of Kingsley, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007, at the Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City.

Lois Lorraine Powell was born April 4, 1918, in Elkhorn Township, Plymouth County, the daughter of Harvey and Nellie (Bainbridge) Bowman. She attended Elkhorn #2 school through the 7th grade. Lois graduated from Union High School in 1935.

On June 15, 1940 Lois and Malcolm "Jerry" Miles Powell were united in marriage at Kingsley. The couple made their home on a farm in Stanton Township, south of Le Mars. They farmed there until 1960 when the family moved to Pierson. Two years later they moved a farm in the Grand Meadow area. Lois and Jerry moved to the Kingston Apartments in Kingsley in 1978. They managed the apartments for several years. Jerry died Aug. 10, 2001.

Lois was an active member of the Meadow Star United Methodist Church and belonged to the Women's Society. She taught Sunday School and was very interested and involved with mission work. Lois enjoyed embroidery, sewing and was an avid reader. Annual picnics like the EUB 4th of July Picnic and the Pratt-Bainbridge Picnic were some of her fondest memories. Most of all she enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. All that know Lois will remember how helpful and gracious she was towards others.

She will be lovingly remembered by her sons Kenneth Powell and his special friend Sue Maack of Le Mars, and Jack Powell and his wife Loretta of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren Kathy Powell of Le Mars, Shelly (Don) Naja of Clearwather, Fla., Jeff (Roxanne) Powell of Sparta, Wis., Brian Powell of Tempe, Ariz., Brooke (Pat) Lyons of Phoenix, Ariz.; step-grandchildren Desi (Tony) Bartel of Glenwood, Deb (Ralph) Jones of Conroe, Texas, Keith Campbell of Sioux City, Patty Fletcher of Council Bluffs, and Bill (Carrie) Campbell of Estherville; great-grandchildren Sheldon, Spencer, Alexa and Grady; step-great-grandchildren Kyle, Kim, Brian, Andrea, Kayla, Eric, Kyle, Tyler and Olivia; three sisters, Edna Carlson, Betty Spink and Joyce Thomson, all of Kingsley; a brother Jack Bowman and his wife Helen of Kingsley; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Meadow Star United Methodist Church, rural Washta. The Rev. Bill Cotton will officiate. Burial will follow at the Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Rohde - Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley. The family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled for 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
