ALTON, Iowa -- Milo J. Probst, 86, of Alton died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, Iowa, after a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Alton, with the Rev. John Vakulskas officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery at Alton, with military rites conducted by American Legion, Floyd Post 200 of Alton. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Tuesday, with a 3 p.m. rosary by St. Mary's Rosary Society, a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Milo was born Sept. 24, 1921, in rural Alton, Iowa, to Otto and Anna (Konz) Probst. He was raised in the Alton area and received his education at St. Mary Academy in Alton. He then assisted his father in farming.

On Jan. 2, 1945, he married Tarsella "Sally" Pottebaum at Alton. They made their home near Alton, where they were engaged in farming. On May 7, 1946, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines during World War II. He was honorably discharged May 15, 1947, and then returned to Alton to farm. The couple retired and moved into Alton in 1986. Milo had been a resident of Happy Siesta since Nov. 28, 2007.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and St. Mary Rosary Society, Knights of Columbus of Granville, Iowa, and American Legion Post 200 of Alton.

Survivors include his wife, Sally of Alton; two sons and their wives, Gordon and Marilyn of Fairibault, Minn., and Keith and Jennifer of Alton; four daughters and their husbands, Eileen and Gary Holzman of Remsen, Claris and Robert Varenhorst of Le Mars, Iowa, Jane and Francis Hinspeter of Marcus, Iowa, and Anita and Alex Heyman of Mattawan, Mich.; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Recker of Lismore, Minn.; a brother-in-law, Milo Recker of Worthington, Minn.; and two sisters-in-law, Dora Probst and Marilyn Probst, both of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Joseph, in infancy and Harvey; a granddaughter, Gina Hinspeter; a great-granddaughter, Amber Frederes; four brothers, Clarence and his wife, Florence, Kenneth, Donald and Rodney; four sisters, Florence and her husband, Tony Frederes, Mercedes "Sally" and her husband, C. J. Wolf, Bernice and her husband, Vincent Gergen and Bernadine Recker; and a brother-in-law, Edwin Recker.

Pallbearers will be Carrie Probst, Brian and Brent Hinspeter, Mark, Kris and Greg Holzman, Holly Varenhorst and Ashly Heyman. Honorary pallbearers will be the rest of the grandchildren.
