Wayne E. Buum, 76, of Akron, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 26, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Wayne Eugene Buum was born Nov. 7, 1931, on the family farm in Union County, South Dakota, the son of Lloyd and Antoinetta (Swanson) Buum. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at Union Creek Lutheran Church. He attended Garlan Country School in Union County. Following his schooling, he helped his uncle, Leonard Swanson on his farm.

Wayne was united in marriage to LaVonne K. Lamoureux on April 29, 1950, in Akron. Wayne worked for the Railroad and Sioux City Battery Company for a few years. Later, he worked for various businesses in Akron, including the Akron Creamery for eight years, Akron Feed Mill for 21 years, and Akron CO-OP for 15 years. He retired in 1993. Following his retirement, he worked part time for Van's Sanitation for more than seven years.

Wayne served on the Akron Fire Department for more than 32 years, serving many of those as Fire Chief. He enjoyed playing cards and Yahtzee. He also enjoyed shooting pool and fishing. But most of all, he enjoyed visiting with his family and friends. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of more than 57 years, LaVonne of Akron; four children: Gregory W. and Coleen Buum of Armstrong, Gary and Garnet Buum of McPherson, Kan., Gordon and MeYoung Buum of Leesville, La., and Glenda Klemme and Todd Plendl of Remsen; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Alvern and Marcella Buum of Beresford, S.D.; and many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. The Rev. Dawn Quame will officiate. Burial will be in Union Creek Cemetery, rural Union County, S.D., with an honor guard by the Akron Fire Department. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. today (Friday) with the family present after 6 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Casket bearers will be his grandsons. Honorary casket bearers will be his granddaughters.
