Dick Langel, 78, of Le Mars, died unexpectedly at his home Monday Dec. 3, 2007, from an apparent heart attack.
Richard Francis Langel was born Oct. 25, 1929, at Le Mars, the son of Leo and Pauline (Rolfes) Langel. He grew up in Le Mars and graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic School. In 1950, Dick joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed overseas in Korea. He married Olga Rodriguez on Nov. 28, 1953, at Hill Air Force Base in Long Island, N.Y. Following their marriage the couple had lived in several northwest Iowa towns, but had lived most of his life in Le Mars. Dick was involved in Ag related business and real estate for many years.
Dick was a member of St. James Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council #1466 and the American Legion, Wasmer Post #241.
Dick enjoyed remodeling houses and treasured the time spent with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his nine children: Cindy Farhat of Ft. Collins, Colo., Mark Langel and his wife Kari of Ft. Collins, Colo., Rick Langel and his wife Kathy of Portland, Ore., Leo Langel and his wife JoAnn of Le Mars, Derek Langel and his wife Julie of Le Mars, Michelle Jones and her husband Tom of Brunsville, Laura Glanz and her husband Tom of Ft. Collins, Colo., George Langel and his wife Jenny of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Renee Clough and her husband Darwin of Sioux Center, and their mother Olga; 28 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven brothers and sisters: Clarence Langel and his wife Julie of Alton, Leonard "Butts" Langel of Le Mars, Roman Langel and his wife Millie of Le Mars, Viola Kellen and her husband LeRoy of Le Mars, Bernice Tierney and her husband Dick of Roscoe, Ill., Marvin Langel and his wife Joyce of Le Mars, and Mary Lou Struab and her husband Leonard of Grand Junction, Colo.; a sister-in-law Harriet Langel of Le Mars; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two granddaughters, Kathie Farhat and Natasha Langel; two brothers, LeRoy in infancy and Don Langel; and a sister in infancy Ann Langel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. James Tigges presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars with military honors provided by the American Legion, Wasmer Post #241.
Visitation will be anytime after 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Church, where there will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m., the Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 8 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church Thursday before the funeral.
The Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars is handling the arrangements.
