Elizabeth R. Smith

Elizabeth R. Smith, 88, of LeMars, died Friday (Oct. 8, 1982), at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.

The body was cremated and memorial services were at 2 p.m. Monday. Rev. Robert L. Grupp officiated. Burial was in the LeMars Memorial cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 22, 1894, near Remsen to Simon and Julia Niklaus Rothlisberger. She was a retired school teacher. She earned her degree from the Iowa State Teacher’s college in Cedar Falls. She later studied at the University of Chicago and the University of Colorado at Boulder.

She was a member of the Iowa State Education Association and the National Education Association. She was a member of the Association for Childhood Education.

She taught for several years in Plymouth county and the last 23 years of her career in the Sioux City school system.

She was a 50-year member of the Presbyterian church, and a member of the Quota club in Sioux City.

Survivors are one sister, Mrs. Lloyd (Erma) Heeren of San Marino, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Thomas K. Veale, McAllen, Tex.; and Lisa Veale, Wakefield, Mass.

Memorials are requested for Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Veale; three sisters, Bertha, Mildred and Ida and three brothers, Frank, Charles and Clarence.
