Helen Herrig, 90, of Alton, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Helen Herrig was born Oct. 4, 1917, at rural Marcus, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Galles) Alesch. Helen was raised in the Marcus area and received her education in the rural school system, Holy Name Catholic School in Marcus and Marcus Public School from which she graduated in 1935. She then attended beauty school in Des Moines. After completing her education, she practiced her trade in the Marcus and Alton area.

On Sept. 23, 1946 she married Ervin Herrig at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. They made their home in Alton where she assisted her husband in his trucking business. Ervin died July 9, 2001. She resided at Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, for three months prior to entering Happy Siesta on April 27, 2007.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and church Guild in Alton, St. Mary Rosary Society, Catholic Order of Foresters, Floyd Post 200 American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed entertaining, playing bridge and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include one daughter, three sons, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Kathleen and her husband Tim Graca of Burnsville, Minn., and their three children, Michael, Andrew and Elizabeth; Chuck and his wife Cathy of Sergeant Bluff, and their four children, Dan and his wife Heather Wolf, Greg and his wife Angie Herrig and their son, Luke, Ben and his wife Michelle Herrig and their two daughters, Kennedy and Reagen, Chris Herrig; Don Herrig of Lake View; Jim Herrig of Iowa City; two sisters, Charlotte Rodesch and Lois and her husband Earl Loutsch all of Remsen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Michael Herrig; one daughter, Jolene Herrig; two brothers, Larry Alesch in infancy and Lorne Alesch; and three sisters, Lorraine Clarkson, Sally Ballard and Norma Neubert.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton with the Rev. John Vakulskas officiating and Msgr. Nicholas J. Ruba concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery at Alton. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Alton. There will be a rosary at 3 p.m. by St. Mary Rosary Society and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. all at the church. The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.

Casket bearers will be Dan Wolf, Greg, Ben and Chris Herrig, and Michael, Andrew and Elizabeth Graca.
