Donald Mott, 81, of Le Mars, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Donald Lee Mott was born Jan. 7, 1927, at Spencer, Neb., the son of Frank and Minnie (Mohr) Mott. Don graduated from Spencer High School in Spencer, Neb. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict from Sept. 18, 1948, until his honorable discharge on Feb. 14, 1951.

Don was united in marriage to Virginia Christina Hanson on June 10, 1960, at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. In 1960, the couple purchased a motel at Canton, S.D., where they owned and operated the motel until 1970. They returned to Plymouth County and lived at Seney. Don worked at Gus Pech Manufacturing and later for McCracken's in Sioux City for 20 years. For the last few years before his retirement, Don worked as a custodian at Westmar College.

Don was very interested in lapidary work. This is the art of working with stones to create functional and decorative items. He enjoyed being a "rock-hound." He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, LaDon and Karla Mott of Le Mars; two grandchildren, Virginia Hanner and her husband Trent of Le Mars, and David Mott of Le Mars; a sister, Geraldine Carlson of Spencer, Neb.; and a brother-in-law, Orval Siebens of Brunsville.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Minnie (Mohr) Mott; his wife, Virginia; a sister, Hester Hartley; and two brothers, Lawrence and Raymond Mott.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars with the Rev. Jason Larson officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars. Interment will be in the Odebolt Cemetery. Visitations will be after 4 p.m. today (Monday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 6 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitations will continue Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Honorary casket bearers will be David Mott, Virginia Hanner, and Trent Hanner.
