Paul "Al" Clarey, 77, of Le Mars, died Monday Feb. 4, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Paul Alfred Clarey was born Feb. 15, 1930, on a farm west of Merrill in Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of John and Esther (McCorkell) Clarey. He graduated from Liberty Consolidated High School in Liberty Township and then served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1950 and again from 1952 to 1954.

Al married Carol Hillrichs on March 30, 1955, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elk Point, S.D. They lived in Elk Point, Sioux City, rural Merrill and moved to Le Mars in 1982. Al was employed with Swift and Company and later with Cargill Inc. in Sioux City until his retirement in 1986. During his retirement he helped his son at "The Wash."

Al was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council #1466 and the American Legion, Olson-Halweg Post #125 in Merrill.

Survivors include his wife Carol of Le Mars; their children: Tim Clarey and his wife Jane of Le Mars, Connie Schmidt and her husband Michael of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Mike Clarey and his wife Kim, Lori Brown and her husband Kirk and Joe Clarey and his wife Jackie, all of Le Mars; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother Richard Clarey and his wife Jean of Petaluma, Calif.; five sisters: Patricia Graham of Sioux City, Ann DeRocher and her husband Leo of rural Merrill, Lucene Sitzmann and her husband Emmett of rural Kingsley, Lucille Beck and her husband Dennis of Columbus, Neb., and Donna Vondrak and her husband Phil of Sioux City; a sister-in-law Helen Clarey of Beardstown, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey John Clarey; his parents; a granddaughter Katie Clarey; and four brothers: Fred and Daniel in infancy and Jack and Raymond Clarey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. James Tigges and the Rev. James A. Bruch concelebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars with military honors provided by the American Legion, Olson-Halweg Post #125 of Merrill.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Thursday at St. James Church, where there will be a Parish rosary at 4 p.m., a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday morning at the church for one hour prior to the funeral. Arrangements are under the direction of the Feuerstein Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Le Mars Area Dialysis Services.
