RUTH L. DE JONG
Mrs. Ruth De Jong, age 92, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.
There will be a funeral service on Monday, February 11, at 11:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. David Heilman will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation with the family will be the hour before the service on Monday at the funeral home.
Ruth Lydia was born on February 21, 1915, at Le Mars, the daughter of the Rev. Samuel and Mary (Sherk) Streyffeler. She was raised at Le Mars, where she attended the Western Union College.
On February 2, 1935, she married Peter Fred De Jong in Wayne, Nebraska. Except for a short time at Carnes, they made their home in Orange City. He passed away on July 7, 1996, in Orange City.
In 2001, Mrs. De Jong became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. In April of 2006, she transferred to Royale Meadows.
She was a homemaker all her life, but she also taught school for one year and was a telephone operator for over 25 years.
Ruth was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. She enjoyed reading books, and in earlier years she did much knitting, especially for her grandchildren.
Survivors include her three children, Jennie “Jackie”, and her husband, Arnold Vander Spoel, of Fort Myers Beach, Florida; Eugene De Jong, and his wife, Leslie, of Tempe, Arizona; and Beverly Van Abbema, of Orange City; eight grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by eleven brothers and sisters.
