KINGSLEY, Iowa --- Genevieve Ruth “Gen” Huges, 76, of Kingsley, longtime school teacher, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 1996, at her residence of an apparent heart attack.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Moville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harold Werley and the Rev. John Crosswhite officiating. Burial will be in the Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Earnest-Dickison-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley.
Mrs. Hughes was born Aug. 16, 1919, in Kearney, Neb., the daughter of Walter and Minnie (Schlattmann) Nash. She graduated from Kearney High School in 1936 and received a teaching certificate from Kearney State Teacher’s College in 1937. She taught rural school in the Kearney area.
On June 15, 1940, she married Moses Earl Hughes. The couple lived in California and then returned to the Kingsley area. Later they moved to Moville.
She taught school at Garfield 4 and at Pierson and in the Moville School System for around 39 years.
She attended night school and received an advanced teaching certificate in 1956 and a B.A. degree from Morningside College in 1972.
Mr. Hughes died Feb. 22, 1982. She moved to Kingsley in 1983 where she worked in the library and helped her daughter in the operation of the Flower Nook.
Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Moville United Methodist Church. She volunteered many hours at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.
Survivors include a daughter, Patty and her husband, Lauren Grubb, of Kingsley; two sisters, Elizabeth and her husband, J. I. Collins, of Mapleton, and Jean Pool of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; four grandchildren, Lisa Niebuhr and Laura, Thomas, and Jerome Grubb; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Gen Hughes Scholarship Fund.
