MERRILL, Iowa -- Ray Weinheimer, 95, of Merrill passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, in Phoenix, Ariz., following a brief illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Merrill, with the Rev. Benjamin Meeks officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Merrill, with military rites conducted by American Legion Olson-Halweg Post 125 of Merrill. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time today at the church. Arrangements are being handled by Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Ray was born in Merrill on July 9, 1908, to Henry J. and Laura (McGillvrey) Weinheimer. He attended school in Merrill, graduating from Merrill High School. After graduating from Morningside College, he worked in Sioux City at Roberts Dairy.

On Dec. 14, 1941, Ray and Mae Belle Carrier were united in marriage in Sioux City. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European and North African Theaters. He was inducted on Feb. 13, 1943, and received his honorable discharge on Dec. 9, 1945. He returned to Merrill in 1948, where he lived the remainder of his life. In 1952 he earned a master's degree from the University of Iowa and was employed until his retirement as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. Mae Belle passed away on March 26, 1983.

Ray was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Merrill and sang in its choir. He served as mayor of Merrill, Boy Scout Master and was a faithful supporter of the Congregate Meals program.

He will be lovingly remember by his three children, Kay VanderStoep and her husband, Philip of St. Cloud, Minn., Jac Weinheimer of Lander, Wyo., and Ann Reinsch and her husband, Dave of Phoenix; six grandchildren, Leigh, Jessica, Erin, Breann, Hailey and Kirsti; and a great-grandson, Stockton.

In addition to his wife, Mae Belle, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jan; three brothers, Earl, Allen and Lloyd; and a sister, Gladys.

Memorials may be directed to Merrill First United Methodist Church.
