MERRILL, Iowa -- Marvin L. Vanderham, 80, of Merrill died suddenly Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Merrill, with the Rev. Dr. Klaus Raab officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Olson-Halweg Post 125 of Merrill. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Marvin Lee Vanderham was born Sept. 30, 1923 in Platte, S.D., the son of Fred and Kathryn (Davis) Vanderham. He received his education in the Platte area and graduated from Platte High School in 1941.
Marvin was united in marriage to Delores Trometer of Merrill on Jan. 10, 1949 at Dakota City, Neb. Shortly after Marvin and Delores were married, Marvin entered the U.S. Army in January of 1949. He later was transferred to the Iowa National Guard and served until November of 1952. Marvin had earned the rank of master sergeant with Company K of the 133rd Infantry headquartered in Le Mars, Iowa.
The couple had farmed for several years near Maurice and Ireton, Iowa. He had also worked in a lumberyard in Le Mars for a couple of years. Marvin worked for Sears in Sioux City until his retirement after 27 1/2 years in 1984.
He had been a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Merrill and had served on the church council. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Marvin enjoyed working in his garden and taking photographs of family and friends. He also enjoyed collecting cufflinks, fishing and golf.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Delores of Merrill; a son, Milton Vanderham of Sheldon, Iowa; a daughter and son-in-law, Monyane and Al Ecker of Spencer, Iowa; two grandchildren, Tina Hoben and her husband, Ben, of Muscatine, Iowa and Tanya and her fiance, Kevin Perkins, of Spencer; a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Kenneth Jacobsen of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Kathryn (Davis) Vanderham.
