BASIL J. BLUM

BRONSON, Iowa – Basil J. Blum, 81, of Bronson died Sunday, March 31, 1996, at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Timothy Johnson, associate pastor, and the Rev. Harold Cooper officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Akron, Iowa, with Monsignor Richard Zenk, pastor of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Akron officiating. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.

Mr. Blum was born Aug. 29, 1914, in Plymouth County in Iowa, the son of B.J. and Agnes E. (McGinnis) Blum.

He married Vernice J. Small Feb. 22, 1938, in Castroville, Calif. They lived in California in the late 1930’s and moved to Iowa to farm in the early 1940’s. In 1960 they moved to a farm near Lawton. The couple retired in 1982 and moved to Bronson.

Mr. Blum was a past member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron and Immaculate Conception Church in Moville, Iowa, and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Sioux City. He was a member of the Akron and Lawton saddle clubs and the Chuckwagon Association of Northwest Iowa. He was active in the annual Easter Seal Ride from Lawton to Sioux City.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Jerome and Georgia Blum of Moville and Vaughn and Mary Blum of Columbus, Neb.; two brothers and their wives, Edmund and Virginia Blum of Akron and Bernell and Hazel Blum of California, and grandchildren, Bradley, Michael, and Julie Blum and Laurie, Carrie and Sara Blum.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis and Gilbert Blum, and a sister, Bernice LaCroix.

Pallbearers will be Michael and Bradley Blum, John Boyle, John Kollar, Mike Pierson and Leonard Sokolowski.
