REMSEN, Iowa – Mrs. Guido (Edith) Berendes, 93, of Remsen died Saturday, Dec. 17, 1994, at Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. John J. McGuirk officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a rosary at 3 p.m. by the Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters of America and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Fisch Funeral Home, Remsen.

Mrs. Berendes was born July 15, 1901, in Holbrook, the daughter of Jacob and Ann (Reynolds) Cox. She was raised and educated in the Holbrook area. In her late teens, she moved to the Marcus area where she did domestic work. She married Guido Berendes Feb. 6, 1923, at Holbrook. The couple lived near Marcus where they assisted his parents in the operation of their farm and dairy. In 1939 they purchased a farm near Remsen which they operated until retiring and moving to Remsen in 1952. He died June 15, 1959. She had been a resident of the nursing home since January 1991.

Mrs. Berendes was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters of America.

Survivors include a son, Donald, of Remsen; two daughters and their husbands, Maxine and Roman Staab and Ann and Harry Beck, all of Remsen; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jack (Shirley) Berendes of Remsen; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ellsworth Cox of Williamsburg.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jack; two brothers, John and Jim Cox and two sisters, Mrs. Bill (Annie) Volk and Mrs. Ray (Mary) Meylor.
