CHESTER E. BERGNER

REMSEN, Iowa – Chester E. Bergner, 91, of Remsen, died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hart officiating, and Deacon Allan Weiler assisting. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Mr. Bergner was born Feb. 28, 1908, in rural Remsen, the son of Frank and Maria (Miller) Bergner. He was raised in the Remsen area, and received his education in the rural school and in Remsen Public School.

He married Margaret Kobberman on Jan. 30, 1929, in Sioux City. The coupled lived in Chicago for several years where he was employed as a mechanic in the police department. They returned to Remsen area in the 1930’s where the couple farmed and operated a trucking business. His wife died Feb. 24, 1996, and he had been a resident of Happy Siesta since July 31, 1998.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Robert and Ann of Remsen; a daughter Marjorie A. Gengler and her husband, Melvin Reinert of Cherokee, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Doris A. Bergner of Lancaster, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; and a sister, Delia Retzloff of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by a son, Chester; son-in-law, Ray Gengler; and two brothers, Frank and Elmer.
