WILLIAM “BILL” E. PHILIPS

AKRON, Iowa --- William “Bill” E. Philips, 101, of Akron died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Akron Care Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Adaville Methodist Church, rural Merrill, Iowa with the Rev. Charles Tefft officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, rural Merrill. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Mr. Philips was born Feb. 14, 1901, in rural Hinton, Iowa, the son of Samuel D. and Catherine (Wienrich) Philips. He grew up in the Merrill and Hinton areas. He married Irene Johnson on Feb. 25, 1925, in Sioux City. She died in December 1980. They farmed in the Akron area for nearly 40 years, retiring to Akron in 1961. He worked for local contractors for a number of years after leaving the farm.

He was community minded. He served 16 years on the Farmers Co-op board. He served on the Akron hospital board and later Convalescent Care Center board for many years. He was a member of the Lion’s Club. He worked on fund-raising drives for the hospital in the late 1940s.

He was a member of Adaville United Methodist Church. He held various positions in the church.

He will be remembered for his rose garden and he became an avid golfer in his later years. He enjoyed family gatherings.

Survivors include four sons and their wives, Richard and Wanda, Jason and Arley, Herbert and Marlene, and Samuel and Nadene; a daughter, Margaret Talbott; a special friend, Bernie Dimmick; a sister, Mildred Gabel; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Don Talbott; two grandchildren, Fred Talbott and Melonie Philips; a great-grandson; three brothers, Arthur, Chester and Elmer; and two sisters, Esther Brown and Bessie Sargent.

Pallbearers will be Mark, John, Matthew, Vance, Reid, Paul and Timothy Philips, and George Talbott.
