IOWA CITY – Bernd Christian Knorr, 39, of Iowa City, drowned Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, following a whitewater rafting accident on the Arkansas River near Buena Vista, Colo.
Bernd was born April 20, 1962, in Munich, Germany, the son of Professor Emeritus George E. and Christiane (Bliersbach) Knorr. Bernd graduated from Iowa City West High School in Iowa City, in 1980. He then attended and graduated from the University of Iowa City with a degree in business. He was co-owner of Sepratech Corporation, an industrial water treatment company based in Houston, Texas.
On May 26, 1991, he married Jennifer Ann Down in Iowa City. Together, they resided at 75 N. Westminster Street, Iowa City.
He was a Master Swimmer, a member of BIC (Bicyclists of Iowa City) and was an avid lover of nature and the outdoors through adventure and traveling.
Survivors include his parents, George and Christiane Knorr of Iowa City; three brothers, Stefan Knorr of Seattle, Wash., Uli and his wife, Leslie Peterson Knorr of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Edward Christof Knorr of Berkeley, Calif.; one nephew, Oriah Knorr of Salt Lake City, Utah; one uncle and his wife, Dieter and Gertrude Bliersbach of Hamburg Germany; and two aunts, Antje Hahn of Berlin, Germany, and Brigette Ostendorf of Munich, Germany.
He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, with the Rev. Robert W. Dean and Dr. George Forell officiating. The George l. Gay Funeral Home and Crematorium of Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity or Nature Conservancy.
