Jennifer Down Knorr
IOWA CITY – Jennifer Ann Down Knorr, 36, of Iowa City, drowned Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, following a whitewater rafting accident on the Arkansas River near Buena Vista, Colo.
Jennifer was born April 20, 1965, in Iowa City, the daughter of Dr. James U. and Jan (Gabel) Down. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1987 from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., with a degree in French. She then received her Master of Teaching Foreign Language from The University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1990. She taught in Pittsburg and Houston, Texas, and was most recently an Iowa City West High School French teacher in Iowa City.
On May 26, 1991, she married Bernd Christian Knorr in Iowa City. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, N.E.A. and I. S. E.A.
Survivors include her parents, Dr. James U. and Jan Down of Iowa City; two sisters, Mara and her husband, Doug Frazier of Boulder, Colo., and Tania Down of Boulder, Colo.; two nephews Ryan and Cameron Frazier of Boulder, Colo.; maternal grandmother, Janet Taylor of Iowa City; three aunts, Glenda Gabel of Long Beach, Calif., Virginia and her husband, Sid Jones of Waukesha, Wis., and Marge and her husband, Antonio Pangas of New York, N.Y.; and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Charles and Mary Down; her maternal grandfather, Cloyde Gabel; and one uncle, Keith Gabel.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City City, with the Rev. Robert W. Dean and Dr. George Forell officiating. The George L. Gay Funeral Home and Crematorium of Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity or Nature Conservancy.
