HAWARDEN, Iowa -- William D. Gant, 78, of Hawarden died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at Hawarden Community Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. LeRoy Seuntjens officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 5 p.m. today at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. today at the church.
William Dave Gant was born June 19, 1925, in Sioux City, to William Buroma Gant and Edith Ellen (Kinleyside) Gant. He graduated from Westfield High School at the age of 16, in 1942. Immediately following graduation, he entered South Dakota State College of Agriculture, where he was encouraged to pursue military officer training. He attended the Naval Training Schools at Bowling Green, Ohio State University and the Naval University in Murray, Ky. He was stationed at the Naval Training Center in Norman, Okla., and the United States Navy Flight School at St. Mary's College in California. He left the military with an honorable discharge to return to Iowa to pursue his love of farming, which he engaged in for 30 years. He then moved to Hawarden, where he continued to work in farming related jobs until his retirement.
He was united in marriage to Beulah Rae port on April 13, 1948, in Akron, Iowa. Together, they had five children. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary earlier this year.
He enjoyed cooking and gardening, was an avid sports fan and enjoyed children of all ages. He was a lifetime member of the Hawarden Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Akron American Legion Post 186. He was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters and their husbands, Sue Yackel-Gant and Ron Yackel of Hawarden and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Mary and Gary Landau of DeWitt, Iowa, Jean and Dan Ellis of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Pat and Ralph Gorton of Naples, Fla.; a son, Michael Gant of Hawarden; two sisters, Dorothy Engel of Sioux City and Kathleen and Ray Janosky of Kewaunee, Wis.; a brother, Robert and Linda Gant of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul Gant; and two sisters, Martha Jane Gant and Sally Harrington.
Pallbearers will be Dan, Zeke, Eli and Beau Ellis, David Port and Josh Schierholt. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Emerson and Colton Rheingans, Carrie Landau and Dylan and Hannah Gorton.
