VERMILLION, S.D. — Blaine L. Root, 91, Vermillion, died Feb. 22 at a Vermillion nursing home after a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Vermillion United Church of Christ. The Rev. Reginald Barrow will officiate. Burial will be in Bluff View Cemetery. Scripture services and Masonic rites will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Wagner-Iverson Funeral home in Vermillion.
Mr. Root was born Sept. 29, 1884 near Akron, Iowa. He attended Sioux City Business School and Morningside College.
He married Ruth Colby July 23, 1953, in Boulder, Colo. They lived in De Smet until 1960, when they moved to Vermillion.
He was an amateur baseball player at Winner and Akron.
He managed a Council Oak grocery store in Sioux City for a short time, before starting in the insurance business in the1920s.
In 1943 he moved to Sioux Falls where he became a special representative of Northwestern Life Insurance Co. He operated the Sunshine Mutual Insurance Co. in Sioux Falls.
Survivors include the widow; five daughters, Mrs. Eleanor Fitzgerald of Wichita Falls, Tex., Mrs. Bonnie Helms of Concord, Calif., Mrs. Elaine Phillips of San Rafael, Calif., Mrs. Virginia Nelson of San Fransisco and Mrs. Peggy Crase of Fresno, Calif.; a son, Gene of Sioux City; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildlren; and a sister, Mrs. Anna Gosting of Sidney, Neb.
