Former LeMars Man dies in Carroll accident
A former LeMars man was fatally injured while helping on a farm south of Carroll on Saturday evening.
Kenneth Wayne Burkett, 67, St. Joseph, Mo., had come up to his daughter’s farm south of Carroll to help with some work on Saturday. The tractor he was driving overturned in a ditch as he was attempting to make a left turn into a driveway at the farm of Auralee Sibenaller and her husband, Dean. The tractor slid into a ditch and turned on its top. It had no cab or roll bar and Burkett was pinned beneath the tractor.
Friends and family members worked with rescuers attempting to free Burkett. He suffered multiple major injuries and was pronounced dead at a Carroll hospital 45 minutes later.
Burkett had worked in Bowers, a LeMars clothing store, before purchasing his own store in Carroll in 1974. He operated that store until 1986 when he moved to St. Joseph, Mo.
Services were held in LeMars today, Tuesday. Details were in Monday’s Sentinel.
