James S. Gabel, 77, of Akron, died unexpectedly Sunday (Sept. 6, 1987) at his home.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Plymouth Presbyterian Church, rural Akron. Rev. Hatty Duncan will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Schroeder Funeral home in Akron.
Mr. Gabel was born Nov. 3, 1909, at Sioux City. He married Lorena Koch March 22, 1935, in Preston Township, rural Akron. A lifelong area farmer, he retired in 1983 and moved to Akron in 1984.
Mr. Gabel served as a township trustee. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and Plymouth Presbyterian Church Brotherhood where he served as an elder.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Gene (Connie) Toben of Akron and Pamela Gabel of Aspen, Colo.; two sons, Leon of Akron and James of North Tonawanda, N. Y.; a sister, Mrs. Lois Spinkelink of Buena Park Calif.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

James Strader Gabel, 77, lifelong Akron area resident, died suddenly Sunday, Sept. 6 at his home in Akron.
James was born November 3, 1909 to James Arthur and Anna Strader Gabel in Sioux City, Iowa. He married Lorena Koch, March 22, 1935 in Preston township, rural Akron. The couple farmed in Preston township until moving to Akron in 1984. James retired from farming in 1983.
He served as a township trustee for many years, and was one of the first farmers in the county to practice soil conservation on his farm, something he was very proud of.
He was a lifelong member of the Plymouth Presbyterian church, rural Akron, where he served as an elder; a member of the Church Brotherhood, and the Plymouth County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife, Lorena of Akron; two daughters, Mrs. Gene (Connie) Toben of Akron, and Pamela Gabel of Aspen, Colo.; two sons, Leon of Akron and James of North Tonawanda, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Lois Spenkelink of Buena Park, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Glenn and Gene.
